How to Exfoliate Your Skin the Right Way

If you’ve ever perused the website of a dermatology or skin care clinic, you’ve probably seen a variety of options on their menu including facials, laser resurfacing, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and so on. Although these scary-sounding procedures use different techniques, their aim is mostly the same, to reveal and promote younger, fresher skin through exfoliation.

Why Exfoliate?

Your skin is constantly renewing itself, creating new skin cells to replace the old as they die and are sloughed off. The dead cells can build up and clog your pores, making you acne-prone, they can make your skin care treatments less effective by acting as a barrier to absorption, and they leave your skin looking dull. Exfoliation removes those dead skin cells, making skin look brighter and fresher and improves your overall skin health. Exfoliation can be either physical (scrubbing the dead skin cells away) or chemical (using alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids and enzymes to break down the dead cells so they can be washed away).

How to Exfoliate Properly

It’s a great idea to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis. The types of procedures you can have done in a clinic or dermatologist’s office will often be quite harsh and leave your skin tender and red immediately afterwards. But there are a number of gentler products and techniques you can use right at home to achieve many of the same results. For best results, you can do a combo of physical and chemical exfoliation.

  • Face – The bareMinerals Skinsorials Double Cleansing Set includes everything you need for effective skin exfoliation and renewal. Add some of the Polishing Grains to the Cleansing Foam and then use the Cleansing Brush to massage, invigorate and exfoliate your skin. Finish by applying Dermalogica AGE Smart Multivitamin Power Serum to revitalize and reverse signs of aging.
  • Body – While showering, scrub down with a buffing cloth and Ahava Mineral Body Exfoliator. The buffing cloth will loosen dead skin cells and the red algae and Dead Sea minerals in the body wash will leave your skin smooth and refreshed.
  • Scalp – Don’t forget about your scalp, it’s skin too! Get rid of dandruff and improve the thickness of your hair by keeping your scalp exfoliated. Try Keune Care Derma Exfoliating Shampoo or Eufora Hero for Men Exfoliating Scalp Treatment and switch to an all-natural boar bristle hairbrush like the ones made by Creative for excellent scalp stimulation.
  • Hands & Feet – Get rid of those calluses with the Mr Pumice Pumi Bar, and then massage in some OPI Exfoliating Sugar Scrub for baby-soft hands and tootsies.
